Well actually it isn't but I thought with that title it might get more of you reading the thread and i'll take travel advice of anyone, even Muslim hating racists.

So, Route 66 - I'm in the very early stages of looking at doing this. It'll be by car not bike as I'll have a 15 year old boy with me (my son - nothing weird).

Anyone on here done it? Is it worth it? would there be better Routes to do instead? Things to think about when planning?

Any help appreciated - or even just venting your feelings about those darker than yourself.

Cheers

Don't do more driving places other than San Fran, Vegas, (Yosemete is inbetween the two) LA and San Diego.

You willl spend an entire day traveling between each. Don't ruin your trip by trying to go to too many places remember every journey is on the west coast is London to Aberdeen.
)

If you try and drive from LA to San Fran along the coast it will take an extra day instaed of just taking 7 or 8 hours. You might want to swerve that and just go up to Malibu when in LA or down to Monterrey when in SF.

Have a nice time.

Sock

Both. Thankfully we have similar interests. After looking at Route 66 we've agreed it looks pretty dull, especially when compared to what you can see and do out West.

We also have friends in near LA so would be abLe to spend more time with them this way.

If its for him, what are his interests?

Pacific Coast Highway

I'd tie it in with Yosemite and Vegas, looks much more interesting than 66

Just watched a couple of videos about it and it looks pretty crap in all honesty.

Looking into PCH now.

Oh and Any Old Iron - if you hate them just because they are Muslim, then yes it does make you racist (or religionist or whatever)

Route 66 is all fucked up now. Don't bother.
By the way, you don't have to be a racist, and it doesn't make you one, to hate Muslims.

It really depends what you want, the USA is a pretty sizeable place......

Route 66 runs across from North East in the Great Lakes, down to the South West just outside Los Angeles.

Now, Chicago is a pretty cool place, and LA is 'interesting' but the rest of it in the middle is what they call 'Americana' and nothing very much has happened in a while apart from a lot of God and GOP.

If you want a feel of 'real' America, then it's as good a way to see the big mental bit in the middle, but if you want excitement and great views that aren't of GAFA then it might not be.

And it depends on your taste as well, lots of people like Florida and Las Vegas, I wouldn't give you a used sheet of Andrex for either.

The last thing to consider is how you are going to cover the miles, it's a bloody long way to go. Renting a car will be ridiculously expensive for a one-way rental, public transport is questionable and slow, so if I where doing Route 66 I'd be buying something in California, and driving it to New York to ship home on the RoRo, and covering some of my costs that way. The trouble with that is that you'll need a US address for all the paperwork and your insurance.

The best road in the USA is US1/101 from LA to Seattle, the Pacific Coast Highway. But you'll need a car that handles and isn't the Camary that Dollar or Hertz will always try to palm you off with. There are specialists in LA who'll hire you something interesting but you'll have to get back to LA.

I think the song "(Get your kicks on) Route 66" might be based on it, but I'm struggling to find a viable and realistic link.

I suspect the jury's still out on that one and may be for some time.

I think the Disney film 'Cars' was loosely based on it

Please explain this thing with "best bits" though.

A))) There's no way to know what will be the "best bits" until you're there.

B))) If you research the so-called "best bits" beforehand (read others' experiences, look at photos on your PHABLET etc), there's less of a point actually going there.
